Big Picture

It was easy for England on Friday evening as they cantered to their first 10-wicket victory in a Twenty20 international and their momentum showed no signs of abating as the season comes to an end. The match was a contest for 10 overs, but from 97 for 2 West Indies subsided in dismal fashion against a combination of Ravi Bopara, Jade Dernbach and England's outstanding fielding.

Graeme Swann had to do some thinking as Dwayne Smith cut loose in the Powerplay but he remained calm and produced a number of clever bowling changes, including using Samit Patel early then entrusting Bopara with the death overs. No wonder he was in a chipper mood after the match. Andrew Strauss, Alastair Cook and Stuart Broad won't hear the end of Swann's time as captain.

For a while West Indies suggested they would present a challenge, but the batsmen struggled against spin as inexperience shone through. However, everyone knew this was a raw side coming over, and deficiencies in batting and bowling can almost be accepted. The shocking standard of fielding, though, was really embarrassing. No matter how inexperienced a team is, they should be able to compete with commitment through diving, catching and throwing.

It was West Indies' first game after their off-season, so some rustiness was to be expected, but the squad had spent time at a camp in Barbados before this trip. Ottis Gibson, the coach, must be exasperated by what he was watching. It's hard to see much changing with one day between games, but West Indies will cling to the hope that one performance can win a Twenty20 match. In truth, though, it will take more much to stop England.

Spotlight

Craig Kieswetter and Alex Hales both played superbly to knock off the target in the first match, but the 10-wicket margin meant there wasn't a chance to see England's exciting middle-order in action. Jos Buttler, the Somerset wicketkeeper-batsman, has played two Twenty20 internationals and still hasn't got to the middle. Although a keeper by trade he has shown some brilliance in the outfield and produced a direct hit to run out Devendra Bishoo on Friday. Straight after this series is finished he is heading off to join Somerset at the Champions League Twenty20.

Marlon Samuels is an experienced player amid a host of new faces for West Indies but he struggled for 4 off 7 balls before being cleaned up by Swann. He'd come in after a flying start provided by Dwayne Smith and it was disappointing that he couldn't consolidate. It's difficult to come in and fire straight away against quality bowlers, but Samuels could have given himself a little more time. West Indies need him to perform.

Team news

There was plenty of assistance for England's spinners in the opening game so there will be a temptation to play either Scott Borthwick, the Durham legspinner, or Hampshire left-arm spinner Danny Briggs, although it's hard to see how they would fit in. One option would be to leave out Steven Finn, but that would mean using Dernbach earlier in the innings.

The Big Picture

These are strange times for Australia's cricket team. Last month, they were knocked out of the World Cup in the quarter-finals, the first time in 12 years they had failed to win the tournament. For the first time in nearly three decades, the captain has resigned, but intends to play on under the new leader. And for the first time in four years, they are about to have a winter that is truly an off-season; the next item on their schedule is a tour of Sri Lanka in August, so it's difficult to know how much they can really take from this three-game series in Bangladesh.

The most fascinating aspect of the tour from an Australian perspective is the prospect of seeing Michael Clarke take full control of the side. He has been a stand-in leader before but now this is truly, officially, his team, even if the old boss is hanging around. On the occasions when he has captained Australia, Clarke has been willing to take risks and think outside the square, and now he can begin to shape a side that works to his plans. Ricky Ponting will be there in the background if required, but don't expect Clarke to rush to Ponting for advice - he will be his own man. In any case, Shane Watson is the new vice-captain.

For Bangladesh, this is a chance to regain some pride after failing to reach the quarter-finals, despite playing all their World Cup pool matches at home. That was a major disappointment for the country, but they have won their two most recent home limited-overs series, against Zimbabwe and New Zealand late last year. Beating Australia in a series would be their finest one-day achievement, and the first step is to begin the series well on Saturday.

Watch out for...
It's nine years since Ricky Ponting played an ODI for Australia under another captain. Not since Kim Hughes has an Australia captain played on after relinquishing the captaincy, but Ponting seems to have genuinely retained his passion for the game and believes he has something to offer the side in the future. His century in the World Cup quarter-final showed that he has not lost his ability to score runs, and he is expected to stay at No. 3.

As captain of Bangladesh, Shakib Al Hasan would have been devastated with the way his team finished the World Cup, with a 206-run loss to South Africa. It was such a disappointing display that he couldn't even identify any specific problem areas - everything was a weakness. It is his task to turn that around, and much of the responsibility will fall on his own shoulders, as one of the team's key men in both the batting and bowling departments.

Team news

Since the World Cup, Australia have lost Shaun Tait to one-day retirement, Jason Krejza, who has been dropped, and David Hussey, who is at home for the birth of his child. That means Xavier Doherty should come in to the line-up as the lead spinner, while there should also be a place for John Hastings, who sat on the bench throughout the World Cup but showed his talents by taking a hat-trick in the warm-up match on Thursday.

Alok Kapali is also back, although it is unclear whether he will definitely play, while Junaid Siddique and Naeem Islam have been dropped from the side that lost to South Africa.

Today, Season 4 of the Indian Premiere League gets underway in Chennai. The star of the opening ceremony will be Shah Rukh Khan. The act by the actor and co-owner of the Kolkata Knight Riders is a closely guarded secret. Declining to comment on the details of King Khan’s performance, a friend of his
conceded, “It’s going to be the grand finale of the opening ceremony.”

Three gorgeous singers, Manasi Scott, Sona Mohapatra and Akriti Kakkar, dressed in Neeta Lulla’s designs, will also be performing a cover version of a song which was still being finalised at the time of going to press.

Manasi, who did a show for the Deccan Chargers last year, says, “It’s the kind of show one’s seen at SuperBowl. Ours will be a peppy, SRKupbeat number that will take forward the celebrations of India’s World Cup victory.”

Sona admits that she was taken aback when she was approached by Wizcraft for IPL after her act at FICCI Frames last month. “I usually perform live with my band and I’m seen as an alternative artiste, not glamorous enough for the mainstream,” says the singer, adding it’s a welcome change to work with various artistes without any preconditions and fuss over make-up, hair and outfit.

“Earlier, I’d wear glasses and dress down till Manasi prodded me to get glam. So after briefing my band on bass and rhythm, here I am now briefing my make-up artist and hair-stylist.”

With two new teams and a radical redistribution of players following the 2011 auction, this year's Indian Premier League has a fresh look to it.

An array of star-studded talent will be on show once again, however there could be as few as three English cricketers playing a part in this year's showpiece.

Well over 20 players from England initially entered into the auction, but just seven were signed up meaning the likes of Graeme Swann, James Anderson, Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott missed out on the lucrative tournament.

Kevin Pietersen was due to compete for Deccan Chargers, however he misses out after recently undergoing hernia surgery.

Others not deemed worthy of their price tags included Luke Wright, Matt Prior, Chris Tremlett, Ravi Bopara and Tim Bresnan.

The lack of faith shown in the England stars available was brought home by the fact that Kolkata Knight Riders forked out $2.4million for the services of India's Gautam Gambhir.

Pietersen was the most expensive English acquisition, fetching $650,000 from Deccan Chargers. But even that was nothing like the then-record $1,550,000 his signature demanded in 2009.

Stuart Broad will miss out on the tournament after he also left the England World Cup camp early with a side injury. His compatriot Dimitri Mascarenhas would have been playing alongside him for King's XI Punjab, but he too has pulled out because of injury.

Hampshire's Michael Lumb has been purchased by Deccan Chargers, who had paid $80,000 for him during the player auction.

Eoin Morgan is the only player from England's ICC World Cup squad to have been signed during the auction and he will be heading out to India with something to prove following his 2010 IPL stint.

Finally there is Owais Shah, who has proved to be a rare English success story in the short history of the IPL. He initially signed for Delhi Daredevils for $275,000 before the start of the second season.

This year will see Shah represent Kochi Tuskers Kerala, one of two new IPL franchises for the fourth season, and he will play alongside VVS Laxman, Brendon McCullum and Muttiah Muralitharan.

The defending champions didn't make it, the mercurial outsiders stumbled, the strong contender choked, the Ashes winners ran out of gas, and after six weeks of high drama, we have come to this: the first all-Asian World-Cup final. And they deserve to be there: five of the top six run-getters, two out of top five wicket-takers, the fielder with the most catches and the wicketkeeper with the most dismissals will all be on show. The two teams have rallied around two of the best modern-day captains: MS Dhoni and Kumar Sangakkara.

Sangakkara is a fiercely ambitious man. Arjuna Ranatunga was almost the freedom fighter, infusing self-respect and clearing the colonial hangover, Mahela Jayawardene was the astute captain who brought so much tactical nous and cricketing intelligence, and Sangakkara is trying to add ruthlessness. Ranatunga pushed the boys to become men, Jayawardene made the men self-aware, and Sangakkara is trying to turn them ruthless. The evolutionary journey has produced a World Cup triumph, a runners-up finish and now, a chance to win it for the second time.

Sangakkara's dream, however, has been hit a nightmarish blow with the injury to Angelo Mathews. Even Muttiah Muralitharan won't be 100% fit. Mathews' absence severely affects the balance of the team and adds huge pressure on an already brittle lower-middle order, where Chamara Silva and Thilan Samaraweera haven't exactly set the tournament alight. Silva, who dazzled in the 2007 edition, has proved combustible in this tournament. Samaraweera is there to manage a collapse, and he did that really well in the curtailed game against Australia. Neither has Mathews' talent to turn a 225 score into 275.

To state the obvious, Sri Lanka will now heavily depend on Tillakaratane Dilshan, the captain and Mahela Jayawardene if they are to put up or chase down a daunting target. They will now have to bat with the knowledge that the lower middle order might not withstand a top-order collapse. Dilshan, though, is in great form, Sangakkara has looked as gritty as ever and while Jayawardene is yet to really flow, he can be always be counted on to come good in pressure games. And Sri Lanka have a varied bowling attack to defend even relatively unsafe totals and the ability to restrict the opposition from piling up too much.

MS Dhoni is a quietly ambitious man. Sourav Ganguly was passionate, Rahul Dravid was process driven, Anil Kumble led from the front with his grit, while Dhoni has been an intuitive captain. He is level-headed, and shrewd enough to marry passion and process. He has soaked up the pressure of being India's captain, is smart enough to know the value of his own brand, and keeps his star-heavy team rolling smoothly with the aid of Gary Kirsten. India's previous two victories, against Australia and Pakistan, have ironed out many of the flaws seen earlier in the tournament. However, those two wins also raise the question of India being emotionally drained. Do they have fuel left in them to raise their game one final time?

The batsmen, who had perhaps tried too hard to compensate for the relatively weak bowling attack by trying to do too much in the end overs and collapsed in the batting Powerplay, seem more aware of identifying a viable target. Someone or other has taken charge during tricky chases. Yuvraj Singh showed tenacity in the chase against Australia, and Suresh Raina maturity in his shot selection against Pakistan.

The poor performance in the early part of the tournament seems to have freed up the bowlers. Expectations are lower and the pressure is off in some ways, allowing them to show better discipline and skill. Munaf Patel has greater control over his legcutters and Harbhajan Singh has slowed up the pace to give himself a better chance to take wickets.

In the last two years, Sri Lanka and India have won eight games apiece against each other. In the last year, the record stands 4-3 in Sri Lanka's favour. In their last five encounters in India, though, the record stands 3-1, with one no result, in the home side's favour. However, these two teams have played each other so often - tomorrow's final will be the 30th time since July 2008- that they should know everything there is to know about each other.

Watch out for...

Sachin Tendulkar has the records, the mountain of runs and memorable Man-of-the-Match performances but there are a few things that have eluded him: a Test innings like Brian Lara's 153, a Ponting-esque record in World Cup finals and, indeed, a winner's medal. He has openly talked about his thirst for that World Cup triumph and has played his part in India's journey to Mumbai by being their top scorer. Will he achieve his dream tomorrow?

Muttiah Muralitharan has written some great scripts for himself: a memorable last Test match where he took the last wicket to get to the magical 800, a fabulous performance almost on one leg in his last ODI at home and now, with one World Cup winner's medal in the bag, he has the chance to end with another. He will fancy his chances against the Indian middle-order; he is likely to go around the stumps and aim for lbws with his off breaks and edges with his doosras. Can he script yet another great farewell?

Virender Sehwag's knock against Pakistan, defying the nerves of a World Cup semi-final, was vital in ensuring India could soak up the middle-over wobbles and reach a competitive score. If there is one man who can put up a nerveless display again in the final, it's him. It will be interesting to see how he plays the Sri Lankan spinners. Will he continue to, as he has done during this tournament and perished a few times, try hitting the spinners almost solely through the off side?

Mahela Jayawardene hasn't scored much after that 100 against Canada but all along, and even ahead of the tournament, he has been talking about his itch to perform in the big games. He has the skills to tame the Indian attack and the elegance to do it in style. It was a hundred in the semi-final of the 2007 World Cup against New Zealand that proved a major turning point in his career. "That hundred gave me confidence that I can do it at this big stage," Jayawardene said. "Ever since that moment I have probably lifted my game quite a bit and turned into a big-match player." Will he turn up for Sri Lanka tomorrow?

Team news

Ashish Nehra has been ruled out of the final and the Indian camp hasn't made it clear whether R Ashwin or Sreesanth will play. This is what Dhoni said when asked a direct question: "That is a tricky one. If you see the Mumbai track there is a bit of pace and bounce for the seamers initially. Also if there is reverse swing going the third seamer can have an impact on the game. At the same time if the three seamers are bowling well I can easily manoeuvre the bowling. But with four spinners and two fast bowlers there is not much room to manoeuvre too much."

And just when you think that's a clear hint Sreesanth will play, Dhoni adds, "If one of the fast bowlers has an off day it gets difficult. Still, not to forget, in whatever opportunities Ashwin got so far he has done really well. We have confidence in him. But we have not yet thought our bowling combination yet."

Sri Lanka have drafted Suraj Randiv into the squad but in Mathews' absence they will most likely turn to Thisara Perera, who almost doubles his career average of 19, and has a strike rate of 146.98, when he plays against India. It remains to be seen whether they will take the brave decision to play Randiv ahead of Rangana Herath. Randiv has played 13 games against India, with 12 wickets at an economy rate of 4.57, while Herath has played just one game against India. Herath has been playing regularly in this tournament, though, while Randiv has been drafted in from the cold.

Pitch and conditions

The hot summer has transformed the nature of the pitch from the one on which Sri Lanka beat New Zealand. It's a dry surface and the curator Sudhir Naik was quoted in Times of India as saying that 260-270 will be an excellent score batting first.

There have been only ten day-night games at this venue and Sri Lanka achieved the highest successful chase, overhauling India's 225 in 1997. The highest score by a team batting second under lights is 250. The chasing team has won four out of ten games under lights though.

Walking in to the freshly rebuilt Wankhede Stadium the day before the World Cup final, the most arresting visuals are the huge hoardings featuring Indian cricketers in body paint and primal scream. There's MS Dhoni looking slightly out of character; there are Harbhajan Singh and Virat Kohli in an extension of their on-field persona; and there is Virender Sehwag looking brooding and intense.
The two best teams in the tournament, and by no coincidence led by the two finest captains, will contest the final. Nothing can be better for what has been an outstanding event. The World Cup has given new life to the 50-over game and it has been hosted with great passion in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and in India. Now it has a dream final.

India will start favourites because they seem the more rounded of the two sides. They have players for most occasions and have batting match-winners of extraordinary pedigree. More important, as the tournament draws to a close, they seem to have a better idea of the combination they must believe will bring the World Cup home.

Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar are the best opening pair of the tournament, though by sheer weight of runs Upul Tharanga and Tillakaratne Dilshan will contest that. After the 175 against Bangladesh, Sehwag has been playing cameos, a bit like a brilliant actor working two shifts and leaving quickly after having delivered his lines impeccably. But even if he only does that, he makes it much easier for the batsmen to follow; especially, he takes the load off Tendulkar, who, apart from a quixotic phase in the semi-final, is batting as well as he ever has. The one thing he doesn't have in his gallery, a winner's medal, is a step away and I will be very interested in seeing how he keeps ambition at arm's length in the final.

India have resolved what is becoming a key position in this World Cup: Suresh Raina has batted with much confidence against Australia and Pakistan. Truly he has won back his spot and it has been wonderful to see him field, an area India are rather thinly endowed in. And Dhoni's extraordinary handling of Yuvraj Singh means he has the option of playing an extra seamer as he did against Pakistan. By working on his bowling Yuvraj has given himself the time to rediscover his batting form, paradoxical as that might seem.

India will come to Mumbai with their confidence soaring after back-to-back wins against opponents against whom they have had their most bruising encounters. And I have no doubt that Dhoni will not allow a win against Pakistan to be rated higher than any other. It cannot be so. It was a semi-final, not a final.

Indeed, Dhoni's leadership has been outstanding. He has backed his hunches and taken calls that might have seemed bizarre at the time, but always he has stayed calm and in control. It is a wonderful quality for a leader to possess. Having taken India to a World Twenty20 title, to the No. 1 spot in Test cricket, he now has the opportunity of winning a World Cup.

Arrayed in front of him are Kumara Sangakkara's mild, humble men, who become mighty competitors on a cricket ground. They have the most wonderfully innovative bowlers, men with unique styles and actions and who come at you from different angles. The top four batsmen are in brilliant form, and like India they are led by a man with extraordinary poise and assurance. Unlike India, though, they haven't quite ticked all their boxes yet.

Dilshan, Tharanga and Sangakkara have batted with great assurance, but after them, Mahela Jayawardene, another big-match player, hasn't had enough time in the middle, and Nos. 5, 6 and 7 appear a bit fragile. I believe Angelo Mathews should be the highest of those numbers, but he seemed to be in some pain in the quarter-final. If he is handicapped, and cannot bowl, for example, the Sri Lankans will lose the one outstanding feature they possess: the balance to the side. Mathews must bowl, otherwise the bowlers will start r at home fetched another and led to a comfortable win in the World Cup semi-final. Injury or not, who'd bet against him bowing on one leg and walking off the field with a handsome smile?

Fans in the subcontinent can sometimes be accused of missing the bigger picture by obsessing with individuals and certainly no one man can win the World Cup by himself. But that Tendulkar and Murali lend this World Cup final a certain poignancy and romance is unquestionable. Neither deserves disappointment but that's the cruelty of sport: for one dream realised tomorrow, there will be one broken. Murali has already been part of a World Cup-winning team but, if India lose tomorrow, Tendulkar will never know the feeling.

Their craft and ways are different, but there are remarkable similarities between Tendulkar and Murali. Their careers have almost run concurrently and they have built records that are unlikely to be ever broken. Neither has allowed fame to corrupt them or divert them from their path. Both have made their nations proud not merely by their achievements on the field, but also with the dignity and grace they have conducted themselves off it. The controversies that Murali's action generated were not of his making; if anything, the way he has dealt with them has merely enhanced his reputation. And if Tendulkar can be accused of anything it is of being too reticent.

They have even had similar rivals. When they dazzled, Brian Lara and Shane Warne were more magical and compelling, but Tendulkar and Murali have endured because their devotion to the game was purer and they allowed nothing to distract them. And over the years they have become strong symbols of national identity in a way Lara and Warne could never have become.

And from their team-mates they have not merely earned respect but genuine affection. Murali has always been the soul of the Sri Lankan dressing room. Both Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara spoke endearingly about what a "nuisance" Murali is with his constant chattering about cricket. "He perhaps thinks he knows more about batting than Sachin," Jayawardene said. Murali, already a star, was the first team-mate to take him out for a meal when Jayawardene was a nobody, and he was neither the first nor the last one to receive his kindness. "Murali is always there for you," Jayawardene said.

The Big Picture

Beyond the hype this contest can perhaps be best viewed through the prism of the two captains. Shahid Afridi is the passionate, exhibitionist leader who doesn't mind showing his emotions on the field. He will shout, cajole, plead, laugh, roar and feel every pulsating moment of the contest. It's exactly what this Pakistan team needs after all those controversies, someone who can remind them of the school-boyish joy that this game can provide.

MS Dhoni is the uber-cool captain and, while he can be vocal while dealing with the press, he is almost invisible on the field. Silent nods of appreciation, a quiet word in the ear, calm instructions, a shrug of the shoulder is all you will get from him. And again, it's what this star-heavy team needs. Someone who can be calm and remind them of the basics of the game.

Pakistan - who told their players they could be here in the semi-finals? - almost renews itself with each crisis. That's how it has been always: Controversies. Paralysis. Rebirth. Success. And more controversies. This was a big tournament for the survival of Misbah-ul-Haq, in the middle of a great comeback. In a sense, the spot-fixing saga and its sordid aftermath was actually a blessing in disguise since it paved the way for his return. For Younis Khan, too, survival instinct, as a batsman facing a dip in form before the tournament, would have helped in dealing with that crisis. Playing his last tournament, Shoaib Akhtar knew this was the time to let his game do the talking. And for that man Afridi, mentally almost perennially young, this was the best chance to dazzle on the biggest stage. He has taken that chance and led the team with great passion. Kamran Akmal lives and breathes in amnesia. Bad memories don't haunt him - who else could have recovered so well after that nightmarish effort against New Zealand?

And yet nothing much has changed with the way they play cricket on the field. It's still the bowlers who win the games for them. For all that is mercurial about them, Pakistan have lost just one game in this tournament.

India have occasionally limped, at times choked, sometimes dazzled, before beating Australia to reach to the semi-finals. The progress card has the bowlers in the red, the batsmen guilty of not finishing the job, and the fielding has always been almost beyond redemption. Their mode of progress should actually have freed them up in some ways. The batsmen must have realised that they can't try too hard to cover up for their bowlers' weakness, by trying to pile on too much, with the batting Powerplay pulling the rug from under their feet a few times. The bowlers showed they are learning from the serial hiding by putting up a pretty disciplined effort against Australia. In some ways, the pressure must be off them, as not many would be surprised if they leak 300 runs.

It's the batting India depend on. Is there any chink in it barring those Powerplay debacles? Gautam Gambhir hasn't been at his personal best - were he playing at his optimum, he would have rendered Virat Kohli superfluous at No. 4. Yet Gambhir's slightly iffy form has made Kohli vital in that middle order. Prior to the tournament, it was felt that Kohli would be a misfit in the lower order, where Suresh Raina and Yusuf Pathan would be more dangerous, and that he might be wasted even further up. But Gambhir hasn't been at his fluent best and India have turned to Kohli to take them through the middle overs. Gambhir has always raised his game against Pakistan and his form will be crucial on Wednesday as it would then give the middle order the licence to attack.

Watch out for...

Virender Sehwag In the past few games Sehwag has - curiously, for a batsman so wonderfully innovative as him - tried to hit every spinner through the off side. He would back away and try to drive, slice or cut and has fallen a few times in the process. Pakistan might well have a spinner bowling at him early and it will be fascinating to see whether Sehwag will retain that off-side bias or be more inclusive, and open, in his approach.

Umar Gul's yorkers: After Lasith Malinga, Gul has probably the best control over the yorker in world cricket today. There have of course been days when the radar has been awry but more often than not he has got them right. The Indian lower middle order will be fully tested by the yorkers, slower ones and the bouncers that he loves to bowl.

Sachin Tendulkar v Abdul Razzaq: Bowlers like Hansie Cronje and Razzaq, more than the Umar Guls and the Shoaib Akhtars, have been reasonably successful against Tendulkar. Cronje used to tease Tendulkar with deliveries shaping away from a length outside off while Razzaq specialises in the opposite: he slides the ball back in, looking for that lbw. He hasn't always had success, but it will be a mini-battle worth watching. Will Tendulkar opt for all-out attack or will he bat with relative care against Razzaq?

Zaheer Khan v Kamran Akmal: Kamran loves to square drive and Zaheer has been able to bend the ball back in to the right-hand batsmen this tournament with the new ball. This contest should be fun.

Umar Akmal v spin: India will rely a lot on the slow bowlers during the middle overs, and Umar is the middle-order batsman who loves to attack spin. He has laid into the likes of Daniel Vettori on the tour of New Zealand and is always itching to cut and slog-sweep.

The signs are that Ashish Nehra is likely to replace Munaf Patel. Even Yusuf Pathan has been sweating it out in the nets raising speculations that he might push R Ashwin hard for a spot in the team. Ashwin has been really good in the games he has played and has added some teeth to the attack while the nature of the patta track has made India think about bringing in Yusuf.

Heavy storms, lightning and rain lashed Chandigarh late on Tuesday evening, immediately adding a light shroud of doubt over the game. For the whole day there were no signs, not even a hint of rain playing a spoil-sport but around 9PM, there were rumbling sounds of thunder accompanied by high-speed winds. The velocity of the winds were so strong that the heavy iron barricades manning the team hotel were blown away.

The weather forecast for Wednesday suggests sunshine during the day with minimal chance of heavy rain. Punjab Cricket Association officials said that they had studied the forecasts for the period ending March 31 and there was "zero precipitation" expected. In simple terms, there were no strong rains expected on the day of the match.

The Big Picture

Fifteen years ago this month, England and Sri Lanka met at the same quarter-final stage of the 1996 World Cup, only for an epoch-changing contest to pan out in front of an astounded crowd in Faisalabad. With his remarkable 82 from 44 balls, Sanath Jayasuriya not only ignited Sri Lanka's charge towards their maiden global title, he signalled the end of England as a force in one-day cricket, as they failed to reach the last four of the World Cup for the first time in the tournament's history.

Since that match, the fortunes and expectations associated with the two teams have been flipped on their head. Sri Lanka went on to crush Australia in the 1996 final in Lahore, and have since contested a semi-final in 2003 and another final four years later in Barbados. England, on the other hand, have found a range of ignominious means to bomb out at the earliest opportunity - a trait they came perilously close to emulating this time around as well, following their embarrassments at the hands of Ireland and Bangladesh.

But regardless of their numerous scares along the way, England are back in the knockouts for the first time in four World Cups, and given the excitement they have served up in the past month, their Colombo encounter once again has the makings of a humdinger. It is doubtless being greedy to expect their seventh consecutive contest to go down to the wire, but the one and only constant in England's skittish campaign has been their ability to raise their game against more fancied opposition. And make no mistake, Sri Lanka on home soil present a formidable challenge - arguably the toughest assignment that any of the quarter-finalists could have landed.

Four years ago in the Caribbean, the Sri Lankans were by some distance the best of the rest - the only team worthy of facing Ricky Ponting's invincible Australians in the final. That they failed to bring home the spoils was no disgrace whatsoever, but while Ponting and his colleagues have since been vanquished at long last, Sri Lanka are arguably a stronger outfit than ever before. Eight of the 11 men who played in that final remain in their squad today, but crucially, sentiment has played next to no part in that fact. Two legends in Jayasuriya and Chaminda Vaas have been put out to pasture, leaving the stage clear for the likes of Ajantha Mendis and Angelo Mathews to bid for their own indelible mark on the tournament's history.

To judge by the narrative of their campaign to date, England will relish their underdog status - for it is a peculiar fact that of the eight quarter-finalists, they are the only side to boast an unbeaten record in matches against their fellow qualifiers. They salvaged a tie against India before out-muscling South Africa and West Indies in a pair of Chennai thrillers, and their never-say-die spirit will doubtless prove invaluable at some stage of a high-octane encounter.

But can sheer tenacity prevail against a team so brimful with talented campaigners? Sri Lanka's top-order triumvirate of Tillakaratne Dilshan, Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara is second only to India in terms of scorecard menace, while the breadth and variety of their attack is hard to rival - Lasith Malinga's slingers and Muttiah Muralitharan's enduring class epitomise the two extremes of a line-up that has men for all seasons and conditions. "It's going to be a significant challenge for us," remarked Andrew Strauss, never a man to cares to overstate the case.

At least England have had a chance to put down some roots in the course of an itinerant campaign. They've had nine days of down-time since their decisive victory in Chennai, and the past week has been spent in the pleasant environs of Colombo, where they will remain in the event of progressing to the semi-final. Nevertheless, the sad news of Michael Yardy's early departure to the UK once again speaks of a squad that is clinging on at the end of a draining winter, rather than clicking through its gears as the grandest prize draws closer. How many more "last big efforts" have they got in them?

Watch out for...

It was on England's tour of Sri Lanka in 2007-08 that Graeme Swann first showcased the skills and mindset that have since propelled him to the upper echelons of the international game. It was his first England tour since his ill-fated debut in South Africa seven years earlier, and with seven wickets at 22.28 in his four games, his determination to grasp his second chance was tangible. That refusal to surrender has driven England's sketchy challenge throughout this World Cup, even in Chittagong when a dew-sodden ball drove him to distraction. He was immense in both Chennai victories, and his touch of class will be invaluable against such potent opposition.

After 492 international appearances, 1343 wickets and almost 63,000 deliveries in a 19-year career, Muttiah Muralitharan is now a maximum of three matches and 180 balls from bidding farewell to the global stage. And in the event of an England win on Saturday, it will all end precisely where it began against Australia in August 1992, at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Murali, however, will not care a jot for such elegant symmetry - even as he approaches his 40th year, he remains as fiercely competitive and enthusiastic as ever. And, as his four-wicket haul against New Zealand last week demonstrated, his wiles cannot be trifled with, least of all by an England team whose collective performance against spin has been leaden-footed in the tournament to date.

After a difficult tournament, Yardy was never likely to feature in this showdown, though his departure has been an understandable disruption to England's preparations, with Adil Rashid - his nominated replacement - still finding his way to Sri Lanka from the Caribbean. Tim Bresnan's troublesome calf has flared up once again, though he came through a fitness test without any visible concerns and has been passed fit for selection. Jade Dernbach, the surprise replacement for Ajmal Shahzad, has been preparing all week as if he is going to play, although James Anderson's big-match experience ought to earn him a recall following a fortnight out of the firing line. The identity of Strauss's opening partner has been confirmed within the squad, with Ian Bell believed to be the chosen man.

Fewer dilemmas for Sri Lanka to consider, especially now that Murali has been declared "100% fit" by his captain Kumar Sangakkara after struggling through the New Zealand victory with a hamstring strain. Sangakkara also acknowledged the potential weakness of Sri Lanka's untested middle order, but backed Thilan Samaraweera, Chamara Silva, angelo Mathews and Chamara Kapugedera as "the best players we have to do that job". One of the Chamaras - Silva and Kapu - seems set to miss out.

Pitch and conditions

The pitch is flat, as they generally tend to be at the Premadasa, although the threat of thunderstorms adds an extra factor to the team's preparations. Afternoon showers on the eve of the game caused the entire outfield to be covered in tarpaulins, which may just sweat a bit more moisture to the surface for the seamers.

    * England and Sri Lanka have faced each other on eight previous occasions in World Cup history, and though England eased to victory in each of the first five of those encounters from 1979 to 1992, they have lost two of the last three - including a thrilling two-run margin in Antigua four years ago.

    * The overall head-to-head for the two teams could scarcely be tighter. In 44 contests, England have won 23 and Sri Lanka 21. However, Sri Lanka have won eight of their last 12 encounters, dating back to 2006.

    * England did, however, achieve a notable success on their last one-day tour of Sri Lanka in October 2007 - Swann's aforementioned comeback tour. Despite losing the first game of a five-match series, they bounced back to win each of the next three for a well-deserved 3-2 victory.

History:

At least four possible dates have been given for the start of county cricket in England. The first, patchy, references began in 1825. The earliest mention in any cricket publication is in 1864 and eight counties have come to be regarded as first-class from that date, including Cambridgeshire, who dropped out after 1871. For many years, the County Championship was considered to have started in 1873, when regulations governing qualification first applied; indeed, a special commemorative stamp was issued by the Post Office in 1973.

However, the Championship was not formally organised until 1890 and before then champions were proclaimed by the press; sometimes publications differed in their views and no definitive list of champions can start before that date. Eight teams contested the 1890 competition - Gloucestershire, Kent, Lancashire, Middlesex, Nottinghamshire, Surrey, Sussex and Yorkshire. Somerset joined in the following year, and in 1895 the Championship began to acquire something of its modern shape when Derbyshire, Essex, Hampshire, Leicestershire and Warwickshire were added. At that point MCC officially recognised the competition's existence. Worcestershire, Northamptonshire and Glamorgan were admitted to the Championship in 1899, 1905 and 1921 respectively and are regarded as first-class from these dates. An invitation in 1921 to Buckinghamshire to enter the Championship was declined, owing to the lack of necessary playing facilities, and an application by Devon in 1948 was unsuccessful. Durham were admitted to the Championship in 1992 and were granted first-class status prior to their pre-season tour of Zimbabwe.

In 2000, the Championship was split for the first time into two divisions, on the basis of counties'standings in the 1999 competition. From 2000 onwards, the bottom three teams in Division One were relegated at the end of the season, and the top three teams in Division Two promoted.

The title of champion county is unreliable before 1890. In 1963, Wisden formally accepted the list of champions "most generally selected'' by contemporaries, as researched by the late Rowland Bowen.

Since the major expansion of the Championship from nine teams to 14 in 1895, the counties have finished outright bottom as follows: Derbyshire 14; Northamptonshire and Somerset 11; Glamorgan 9; Nottinghamshire and Sussex 8; Gloucestershire and Leicestershire 7; Worcestershire 6; Durham and Hampshire 5; Warwickshire 3; Essex and Kent 2; Yorkshire 1. Lancashire, Middlesex and Surrey have never finished bottom. Leicestershire have also shared bottom place twice, once with Hampshire and once with Somerset.

Match preview: Pakistan for series draw ?
England's Test season has been given an unexpectedly high-octane finish as they head to Lord's trying to reassert their authority over Pakistan and prevent the visitors pulling the series back to 2-2. While a remarkable turnaround of this sort was never dismissed as impossible - Pakistan have built a reputation around being unpredictable, after all - few would have backed the visitors after they were thrashed by 354 runs and nine wickets in the first two Tests at Trent Bridge and Edgbaston.

Mohammad Yousuf's Lazarus-like return to Test cricket was a catalyst for last week's fittingly dramatic four-wicket scramble to victory at The Oval, but Steven Finn insisted: "having Yousuf in the team doesn't make them a different team at all". His impact, though, was clear.

As important as the runs Yousuf scores his calming effect on the batsmen around him - Azhar Ali being a prime example - should not be underestimated. His 56 in the first innings set up Pakistan's first total over 300 this summer and when he departed for 33 in their second innings chase the panic and indecision that have plagued the visitors' young batsmen came flooding back.

For England, Lord's offers a chance to throw off the creeping doubts that have hung around despite a successful run in the past year which has included regaining the Ashes and drawing in South Africa. Despite all the talk of focussing on the task at hand the looming Ashes rematch has been a constant sub-plot to the season.

Can Kevin Pietersen can get his strut back? Can the seam attack show their mettle when wickets cannot be picked up at will? Has Alastair Cook's Oval renaissance marked an end to his recession or is he heading for a double-dip? Still lots of questions, and just one Test left.

Watch out for...

After his run of 63, 92 and 45 against Australia, England's attack made Salman Butt appear woefully out of sorts as his next five Test innings brought returns of 1, 8, 7, 0, and 17. His second-innings 48 at The Oval suggested that he was finding his way back to some sort of form, however, and after dropping down one place to No. 3 his middle-order alliance with Yousuf could provide the ballast to Pakistan's flighty line-up.

Kevin Pietersen is known to raise his game for the big occasion, and with England arguably the team under more pressure with the weight of expectation on their shoulders going into the fourth Test, the stage could be set for a vintage performance from him. Though he undoubtedly has the full backing of the England set-up despite the scratchiness of his recent dispalys, Pietersen will be hungry for a big score to end the season on a high.

England have added Tim Bresnan to their squad for the final Test, but it is unlikely he will make it into a final XI. As in the build-up to The Oval, Bresnan is only on standby for any late injury scares.

The one issue was whether Umar Gul had recovered sufficiently from his hamstring injury to be in contention for selection, but given Wahab Riaz's memorable five-for on debut at The Oval, he has been backed by the management and will retain his place for Lord's. Gul is a vital cog in Pakistan's limited-overs side, and wasn't going to be rushed back into the side if there was any chance of aggravating his injury.

Pitch and conditions

Lord's has a reputation for high-scoring matches and the pitch should provide a welcome respite for both side's batsmen after the bowler-friendly conditions encountered so far. That said, it's been a long time since a Test was staged here so late in the season so there is an element of uncertainty as to the pitch. Another factor to consider is the weather with rain a distinct possibility over the first two days. All in all, this could well be the first Test since Bangladesh's visit to the same venue at the beginning of the season to go five days.

    * The last time these two sides met at Lord's, in 2006, the result was a high-scoring draw. Five centuries were recorded in the course of the match, with Mohammad Yousuf's fluent 202 topping the list.

    * Kamran Akmal's keeping appeared much improved at The Oval, but his batting in English conditions remains dire. After scoring 10 and 0, his average against the home team in their own conditions stands at 11.10.

    * James Anderson is the leading wicket-taker in the series by some distance with 20 - a personal best for him in a Test series. Graeme Swann and Mohammad Amir are behind him with 13 scalps each.

New Zealand are coming off a five-day break in their first tournament after a few months off. England had to work harder than expected to wrap up the second Test - and at one stage their frustrations, especially Stuart Broad's, boiled over - but eventually a commanding nine-wicket success confirmed the gulf between these two teams. Now the home side's attention is firmly fixed on a whitewash as the countdown to the Ashes gathers pace; with a little help from Ricky Ponting's whitewash comments. Pakistan continue to be a mind-boggling mixture of confused signals, but after much deliberation it has been confirmed that Zulqarnain Haider is out of the series which is a major blow after his gutsy display last week. How much impact Broad's throw actually had on Haider's finger is still subject to conjecture, but it adds a bit of spice to this encounter. The Oval, of course, has had its fair share of controversy in England-Pakistan contests when four years ago the match was abandoned on the fourth evening after Darrell Hair accused the visitors of ball tampering.

This time, though, the venue should lift Pakistan's hopes of fighting back to at least give England a decent contest. The ball is unlikely to move as much (although cloudy weather is still a possibility) and it is a fast-scoring ground. Mohammad Yousuf will return to strengthen the batting line-up, though he is short of form and fitness. So far Pakistan's lower order has been more productive than the top and Salman Butt desperately needs to rediscover his form. If the pitch turns Saeed Ajmal could also prove a handful with England's batsmen struggling to pick his doosra.

But it's very hard to see England being denied another victory over the next five days. They have three impressive quicks backed up by the outstanding Graeme Swann. What this match does present is the chance for the batsmen to dominate and show their hunger for big scores. Alastair Cook is most in need of a major contribution after a difficult season, but this England team doesn't ditch players at the first sign of a problem.

Watch out for...

Stuart Broad made the headlines for the wrong reasons at Edgbaston for his petulant display on the third afternoon when he hurled the ball at Zulqarnain Haider in his follow through, having twice not turned to the umpire in earlier appeals. He copped a fine, but was lucky not to get himself a ban and wickets are unlikely to come as easily at The Oval so Broad's attitude will be closely watched. His aggressive mindset has been supported by team-mates and management, including bowling coach David Saker, but he continues to tread a fine line and the umpires will be keeping an eye on him.

After ruling himself out last week Mohammad Yousuf will resume his Test career and bring vital experience to the middle order. He managed a brief innings during the rain-effected match against Worcestershire where he made 40 off 54 balls but will be nowhere near peak readiness. There is a suggestion that his recall hasn't gone down well with Salman Butt who wants to put his faith in youth, but without Yousuf their top order is as callow as anything in recent memory.

In a break from the norm England named their XI three days out from the Test to allow Tim Bresnan and Ajmal Shahzad to play for Yorkshire. Bresnan flew down to London from Newcastle to link up for the final practice day, but is only on standby for any late scares.

As always Pakistan's team proved something of a guessing game, but in the end they have opted for four changes - enforced and otherwise - to the side that lost at Edgbaston. Kamran Akmal returns to replace the injured Haider and Yousuf comes into the middle order at the expense of Umar Amin, with Yasir Hameed finally getting an outing in place of Shoaib Malik as well. Umar Gul is also ruled out which means a debut for the left-armer Wahab Riaz.

Last year Bill Gordon produced a raging turner for the deciding Ashes clash and played a major part in England reclaiming the urn. There is no need for anything so dramatic this time and we can expect a far contest between bat and ball. India's questions are several: Is Ravindra Jadeja good enough? Is there an in-form allrounder who can replace Jadeja, or should the part-time spinners fill the role of the fifth bowler in the subcontinent? Is medium-pacer Abhimanyu Mithun good enough? Should Virat Kohli play in the middle order, or should Rohit Sharma be persisted with? Will Ishant Sharma's form dip further if he is looted for runs in this format? And how long will Dinesh Karthik continue to squander starts?

For quite some time Sri Lanka, too, have had problems with their combination. Can Chamara Kapugedera grab one of his numerous opportunities, or it time to give Dinesh Chandimal a run? Is Thilan Samaraweera a good fit for ODIs or should he be replaced with either Chamara Silva or Thisara Perera? Should Suraj Randiv be played with Ajantha Mendis or with Rangana Herath? Should Dilhara Fernando be given a game here and there?

In the short term, however, Monday's match is crucial to India's hopes of staying alive in the tri-series but they have been dealt a blow by the absence of Yuvraj Singh, who has been diagnosed with dengue fever. Ashish Nehra, who has some trouble with his gluteus muscles, is also uncertain.

A second defeat, following the bonus-point loss to New Zealand, will make it hard for Dhoni's men to engineer a turnaround. An Indian victory will leave all three teams on a win each and the tri-series wide open.

Watch out for...

Rohit Sharma has been having a tug-of-war with Virat Kohli over a middle-order spot for some time now. Both batsmen have had chances to cement it but neither has done so. Rohit has wasted more opportunities but he's made a comeback in recent times. He can bowl spin but Kohli can bowl medium-pace, and both were tagged with attitude problems in the past. The future perhaps belongs to both, but can Rohit grasp his chance now?

It's easy to like Chamara Kapugedera. He throws himself at the ball on the field, bats wherever his captain wants him to, and seems to be a good team man. But is that enough to save his spot, and could this series be his final shot at securing a permanent spot?

Big Picture

Nottinghamshire
The return of Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann to Nottinghamshire's ranks for finals day has left the selectors with the pleasant problem of deciding who will play out of a fearsome bowling pack that also includes Ryan Sidebottom, Dirk Nannes and Darren Pattinson. Their bowling depth rather puts Nottinghamshire's batting in the shadows, although David Hussey certainly brings a touch of Twenty20 pedigree to their middle order. His 497 runs in the competition so far place him fourth in the run-scorers' list, and on finals day only Hampshire's Jimmy Adams will have more competition runs under his belt. Alex Hales has also been in decent nick in the tournament with four half-centuries to his name so far, and although Nottinghamshire stumbled slightly at the tail-end of the competition their early-season form and bowling strength makes them serious contenders for the title.

Watch out for...
Nottinghamshire haven't seen much of Graeme Swann in 2010, but despite the fact that Finals Day will be his first Twenty20 match for his county this season he remains a threat, as is evidenced by his 71 T20 wickets at an economy rate of just over a-run-a-ball, and won't be put off by the short boundaries at the Rose Bowl.

Somerset
With a line-up that includes Marcus Trescothick, Craig Kieswetter, James Hildreth and Kieron Pollard, the ability of Somerset's batsmen to clear the boundary was always expected to be their strength. Trescothick continues to show no signs of slowing down, launching Somerset's innings with gusto time and again, and although Kieswetter's form has been disappointing the solidity of the middle order has more than made up for his frailties. Hildreth has proved adept at accumulating runs and rotating the strike, while Pollard has done all that was expected of him in striking his runs at the lofty rate of 174.57, and Jos Buttler is already starting to make a name for himself as an unflustered finisher. But Somerset's bowling also deserves an honourable mention. Alfonso Thomas has been a revelation with the new ball, his skiddy pace bringing him 31 wickets - the most by anyone in the tournament - at barely more than a-run-a-ball. Just behind him is Pollard, proving his allround worth with 28 scalps, and Somerset also have a gaggle of run-choking spinners - most recently the left-arm spin duo of Murali Kartik and Arul Suppiah set up a confidence boosting win over Northants at Taunton by giving away a frugal 29 runs in their combined spells. This will be the third time that Somerset has reached the finals of the Twenty20 Cup and after winning it once in 2005, with no clear chink in their armour, this could well be their year again.

Watch out for...
Marcus Trescothick continues to lead Somerset from the front by giving the ball a hefty thump at the top of the order. If he gets anywhere near the brutal form that saw him smash a 27-ball 78 to help Somerset breeze past Hampshire's 216 for 5 with overs to spare at Taunton in July then almost no total will be out of his side's reach.

Essex
Essex head to finals day looking to make it third time lucky. Twice they have reached the semi-finals and both times they have failed to progress. After a tricky start to the season - that saw their captain Mark Pettini resign and the team lose three of their first four games - they have been a powerful force. Their strength lies in a batting line-up led by Ravi Bopara, with a resurgent Pettini at the top of the order and an ageless Grant Flower bringing a wealth of experience to the middle. Bopara will be joined by Dwayne Bravo, who was parachuted in for a fleeting finals day visit, Ryan ten Doeschate, who was in sizzling form before tearing a calf muscle two months ago and Alastair Cook. Despite Cook's horrendous Test outings this summer he has had a productive FP t20 competition, making 350 runs at 38.88. The bowling is more of a liability but the imported duo of Bravo and the returning Danish Kaneria could give them a chance. Spinners have proved pivotal in the shortest format and Kaneria has experience and class.

Watch out for...
Ravi Bopara's languid talent has never been in doubt. After a stuttering start to his international career, however, he needs to prove he has the temperament to succeed when the pressure is on. He is Essex's leading scorer in the competition with 471 runs and a big score at the top of the order, in front of capacity crowds at the Rose Bowl, will both help silence the doubters and be key to his side's hopes of progressing to the final.

Hampshire
Hampshire are the romantic's team for the finals. A side packed with youngsters and led by a veteran in Dominic Cork, they are looking to become the first host side ever to win on finals day. Winning just eight of their group games Hampshire had been the least impressive of the four semi-finalists and have lost the services of Michael Lumb to a broken foot. They would undoubtedly be strengthened by Kevin Pietersen but the county would rather stick with the players who have got them this far. In Jimmy Adams they have the competition's top scorer and he is backed up Michael Carberry, Neil McKenzie and 19-year-old James Vince. Vince starred with an unbeaten 66 to coolly guide Hampshire past Warwickshire in the quarter-finals and his effortless talent could be a revelation. Behind the evergreen Cork in the bowling ranks, 19-year-old left-arm spinner Danny Briggs could be Hampshire's most potent weapon. He has nous and plenty of audacity and has been in a rich vein of form recently. The captain's relish for the big occasion and home advantage will be in Hampshire's favour.

Watch out for...
There are few cricketers in the English game who so instinctively enjoy the attention and pressure of showpiece events as much as Dominic Cork. Though he delivers his verbals quicker than his outswingers these days his competitiveness could make him an irresistible force in front of his home crowd.

Review:
The days of overseas players in English domestic cricket forming lasting links with their county and become part of the club's fabric are long gone. There are still some who return year after year, but nowadays it's almost impossible to keep up with the comings and goings. Taking it to the extreme is Dwayne Bravo, who has jetted in to join Essex for Friends Provident t20 finals day and whose stay with the club could last one match.

It is a product of the Twenty20 game where clubs are desperate to attract big-name signings to help their push for success and it's no surprise that talk of freelance cricketers is becoming stronger. Although Bravo is still fully committed to international cricket it is another example of a player who is willing to hire out his services to any team that wants them around the world. He may need reminding about a few of his new team-mates names on Saturday.

"I'm really excited to be over here and it's nice to play for a team I've watched over the years," he told Cricinfo. "It's becoming quite normal for cricketers to play for a lot of teams all over the world so it won't be a problem slotting into a new dressing room. There are some new faces, but a lot of the guys I know and have played against before."

Essex searched for an allrounder after injuries to Graham Napier and Ryan ten Doeschate, two key figures in their Twenty20 success over the years, and Bravo will add to a strong batting line-up that includes Ravi Bopara, Mark Pettini and Alastair Cook - who has been released from England duty.

Despite the fleeting nature of his visit this time Bravo, who played for Kent in 2006, would like another opportunity in English cricket although knows the packed international calender will make it difficult for him to find a window.

"If the chance came up I'd love another go," he said. "But there's a lot of international cricket these days and it's hard to find the time. County cricket is something a lot of players say has improved their game so it would be good to have a longer spell."

The four teams at Finals Day this year - Essex are joined by Nottinghamshire, Somerset and Hampshire - know they are playing without the prize of a Champions League spot for the two who make the final. The global club tournament, which takes place in South Africa next month, won't include a county after the dates clashed with the end of the domestic season and the situation has led to tension around the shires.

Bravo, though, is already heading to the event as part of Mumbai Indians, another of the group of teams he now turns out for. He has also recently completed the Caribbean T20 tournament with Trinidad and Tobago, where he made 116 runs in three innings and took six wickets with an economy rate under six, so brings some form to Essex and hopes to maintain that heading into South Africa.

"I'm feeling good, it went well in the [Caribbean] T20 where I got some runs and wickets. The standard was good and I was satisfied with how it was run. For me the more cricket I play the better and Essex is another challenge for me followed by the Champions League."

Although Bravo is keen to play as much as possible the issue of workload is never far away as demands on the top players continues to climb, both on the international stage and with extra Twenty20 events such as the IPL and Champions League. Bravo, though, doesn't believe it has reached breaking point.

"It's all about managing your time and body properly," he said. "Yes, there is a lot of cricket but if you look after yourself you should be okay."

"The great thing about New Zealand is they are very competitive," Sangakkara said before the start of his team's practice session under lights. "They play very orthodox, very structured cricket. Strategies are set and they always try to execute those strategies. That's the discipline that I think we can all learn from New Zealand.

"It's very important in Twenty20 and one-day cricket now that you have applied executable strategies out in the middle that everyone understands and everyone can execute according to their own abilities. New Zealand does that probably the best in the world, so that makes them a very tough side."

The discipline and strategy are particularly important when batting second in the challenging conditions in Dambulla, where the team batting first has had a distinct advantage in recent matches. "It's not mostly skill, it's about being mentally attuned to what's happening there and being ready with not just one but two or three plans," he said.

The tournament is seen as a part of the team's fine-tuning ahead of the World Cup but the pitches in Dambulla aren't the traditional subcontinental flat tracks. "Playing in conditions like this is very good for us because when it is a challenge, you got to relish it," Sangakkara said. "The harder the things you have to do out in the middle, the improvement becomes faster. For us, that is how we are going to look at this tournament."

One aspect of Sri Lanka's cricket which will be closely watched is the spin bowling. With no Muttiah Muralitharan around, it's a chance for any of Suraj Randiv, Ajantha Mendis and Rangana Herath to establish themselves in the side. "It depends on the opposition we are playing," Sangakkara said when asked about the first-choice spinner. "Depending on that, we will pick one or the other [Randiv or Mendis]. We got Rangana Herath in the wings as well. So each time we will make sure that we play the right combination for the opposition unless there is a huge difference in form between the bowlers."

New Zealand had gone in without a spinner in the first match, but that could change in case Jacob Oram fails to recover from his hamstring problem. "We have a little bit of a niggle with Jacob Oram, just a tight hamstring, hopefully he can recover well tonight, we'll see how he goes tomorrow," the captain Ross Taylor said. "He's an outstanding bowler for us, top-10 in the one-day rankings, if we were to lose him, it will be a huge loss but it will be an opportunity for whoever comes in."

Six months after their disastrous tour of Australia, Pakistan have a chance to redeem themselves against Ricky Ponting's men. Things are a little different for Pakistan now: Shahid Afridi is in charge, Mohammad Yousuf is gone and the series is being played on neutral territory at Lord's and Headingley. Pakistan's batting looks thin, with Umar Akmal the only man in the top six who averages over 40, but their strong attack might thrive in the English conditions. There should be swing for Mohammad Asif, Mohammad Aamer and Umar Gul, but in order to snap Australia's winning streak of 12 consecutive Tests against Pakistan, the bowlers will need support.

Australia's stretch of victories against Pakistan goes all the way back to Brisbane in November 1999. It's a joint record winning run for any nation over any other nation, equalling the 12-game streak Sri Lanka currently hold over Bangladesh, and victory at Lord's will give Australia the outright all-time high. Not since November 1995 at the SCG have Pakistan beaten Australia in a Test, and although Afridi might provide them with a spark, the Australians remain strong favourites.

Australia will have two debutants, the wicketkeeper Tim Paine and the legspinning allrounder Steven Smith, but the core of their side remains the same. As much as the Australians will talk of being focused on this series, each of their four Tests between now and November also provides them with a chance to fine-tune their Ashes preparations. One move they will make in this series is Michael Clarke up to the No. 4 position, which reflects his importance as the team's leading run scorer over the past year, while Michael Hussey will drop down to No. 5.

Then there's also the chance to play a Test at Lord's, which is an opportunity that usually comes around only once every four years. Clarke is the only man from either side with his name on the honour board at Lord's and this might be the final chance for Ponting to earn such a place in history. On the eve of the match he didn't close the door on the possibility of being back for the 2013 Ashes, but nor did he rule out this being his last Lord's Test. "It would be nice to have been up there in an Ashes Test match," Ponting said of the honour board. "That might happen - we'll wait and see what happens there."

Watch out for...

There is much excitement about Australia's debutant Steven Smith, although nobody quite knows what to expect from him. Smith is being played as the primary spinner but Ponting thinks he has a lot of work to do in that aspect of his game. On the other hand, Pakistan have had a habit in recent years of gifting wickets to Australian spinners. Smith will also be one of the strongest No. 8 batsmen Australia have had in recent memory.

Shahid Afridi hasn't played a Test in four years, but as the new captain he will be the pulse of the Pakistan team. He brings energy to any match he plays and Ponting is keen to nullify his influence as quickly as possible. Ponting believes the younger Pakistan players will run off Afridi's spark but as the No. 6 batsman, second spinner and general in the field, he will have quite a workload.

There is no doubt over the make-up of Australia's XI and only a last-minute injury will allow Usman Khawaja, Steve O'Keefe or Peter George to win a baggy green. There will be three changes from the team that Pakistan met in Hobart, with Brad Haddin, Nathan Hauritz and Peter Siddle all out through injury. Ben Hilfenhaus is making his comeback from a long-term bout of knee tendonitis and should be useful in the swinging conditions.
